Openpit mining, or opencast mining is a surface mining technique of extracting rock or minerals from the earth by their removal from an open pit or borrow. This form of mining differs from extractive methods that require tunneling into the earth, such as long wall mining.

There are two types of benches in each open pit mine: working benches and safety (ch) benches. Working Benches Working benches are where unit operations (drilling, blasting, loading, and hauling) are performed. Working benches are wider than safety benches to provide enough room for the mining equipment to perform their tasks.
